WWII in Stingray Class

posted 20 Sep 2017, 03:34 by Philippa Dancey

Stingray's have made an excellent start to this terms work and topic which is all about World War 2 over the past week and a half
We have done lots of research via the internet and found out about when the War started, who was involved and some of the devastating effects it had on children living through the war.
The children enjoyed watching the TV programme 'Good Night Mister Tom' which gave them an insight into what it was like for a child their sort of age to be evacuated.
And finally, the children have enjoyed building World War 2 models out of k'nex and Lego and making a paper Spitfire.

Summer Fun Day at the Ridge Academy

posted 11 Jul 2017, 04:03 by Philippa Dancey

Huge thanks to the Big Lottery Celebrate funding for supporting our wonderful Summer Fun Day.  This year the sun shone and it was hot, hot, hot but that made the day even more special for all who attended.  We have families from the local community, parents and friends of our own pupils, the police, the fire brigade, Cheltenham football academy and more at the event.  With bouncy slide, castle and sumo suits, an ice cream van and stalls run by each classroom there was plenty for everyone to do.

Summer continues buzzing in Ocean Room

posted 4 Jul 2017, 02:41 by Philippa Dancey

This week in the Ocean Room we have still been holding on to the summer. We have looked into the life of a bumble bee and how important they are to society. The children have created their own buzzy bee finger puppet and they look great! We have baked some yummy multicoloured cakes which was great fun mixing all the different colours together. The Ocean Room children have been making a big effort this week with their targets, with lots of them reaching their given aims.

Pirate adventures in Seahorses

posted 27 Jun 2017, 10:30 by Philippa Dancey

As part of our pirate topic Seahorses have been learning how to write descriptive sentences using adjectives and positional language to describe their settings. They then created a pirate character and a wanted poster. They have  done a fantastic job and we are looking forward to writing our pirate adventure stories soon.

Keeping to our summer theme the children have been listening to and following instructions to make their own yummy edible flowers. We have been having lots of discussions on keeping healthy and safe in the hot weather and how to keep ourselves cool and hydrated.

Aztecs in Stingray Class

posted 22 Jun 2017, 09:17 by Philippa Dancey

This week has been another busy week in Stingray Class.

The children have continued working on their Non-chronological reports linked to the Aztec's. They have identified the features and started to gain an understanding of how one should be set out. In maths we have started looking at multiplication and division sums.

In topic the children have created Aztec head dresses using a variety of materials and they have identified where cocoa beans grow in the world.

Starfish Pirates

posted 20 Jun 2017, 08:55 by Philippa Dancey

Last week, Starfish learned about the structure of the story 'Peepo', and we have been creating a special class project on the iPad - so watch this space!

In Maths, we have been carrying on with multiplications - learning how to read and solve multiplication problems using objects to help us.

We also had a Topic Day on Thursday and we went on a Treasure Hunt in the school playground (carefully trying to stay out of the sea in case the crocodiles snapped at our feet). Afterwards, we made our own pirate treasure maps!

Under the Sea with Starfish

posted 13 Jun 2017, 11:40 by Philippa Dancey

Last week, Starfish discovered our new topic for this term was Under the Sea. We have made handprint fish and starfish, a big shark and a submarine! In English, we have been reading 'Peepo' by Janet & Allan Ahlberg and had a pre-learning task of writing about a room in our homes. In Maths, we have started to learn about multiplication by counting in sets of 2, 10 and 5. The children have done well to come back to school settled and ready to learn! Keep it up, Starfish!

Pirates in Seahorse Class

posted 13 Jun 2017, 11:35 by Philippa Dancey

Seahorses have started their new topic Pirates this term. The children have made a good start on making their class look fantastic with a range of under the sea and pirate crafts including CD fish, tin foil pirate hooks and hand print pirates. They also created some good big art using collage and finger painting.

In English they started looking at settings and making their own desert island setting in the sand pit. They shrunk themselves into mini pirates and had to write a message in a bottle describing their island. They produced some fantastic work!
