Curriculum Information

At The Ridge Academy we teach a curriculum that is similar to other schools because we believe that our pupils have the right to the same school experience as any other primary aged child. The key difference in our curriculum delivery is that it is delivered in very small classes with high levels of staffing.

We teach reading through daily shared or individual sessions. Similarly spelling and phonics are taught in small groups using the phonics programme called Letters and Sounds. Writing is taught through daily literacy lessons and these are linked the current creative curriculum theme. The children are encouraged to apply their literacy skills across the curriculum.

Numeracy is delivered during a daily lesson.  Children learn to use their written skills and to develop  their mental maths. There is a focus on number skills and practical maths.

Creative Curriculum

Most of the children’s learning is done through the Creative Curriculum. Classes have a different theme every term. These range from traditional topics such as WW2 to less familiar topics like Weird, Wacky and Wonderful. The focus of each topic varies but the following subjects are taught:

·         Science

·         ICT

·         History

·         Geography

·         Art

·         DT

·         PE

Spanish and Music

These are taught by a specialist. The focus is on practical activities that help the children develop their skills.

RE is taught on an RE day each term. These have different themes eg Easter

Our PSHE curriculum is delivered by class teaches. It focuses on teaching children skills for their future life. We focus on themes throughout each term. We try to incorporate off site visits as part of the curriculum, for example a trip to SkillZone.

Nurture provision at the Ridge is of paramount importance.
